ESIC Registration – Everything You Need To Know

Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) is a social security scheme, mandated for factories and establishments with over 10 workers (20 workers in some states). Managed by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), the scheme provides a number of social security benefits to workers including unemployment allowance, Dependant’s benefit, disability benefit, maternity, and other benefits.

Under the ESI scheme, employees contribute 0.75% of their monthly wages, while employers contribute 3.25%. These rates may be revised periodically. These contributions are payable to the ESIC.

Who Needs to Apply for ESIC Registration?

The ESI Act is applicable to factories and establishments employing more than 10 persons. Mandated establishments include:

  • Shops, Hotels, and Restaurants
  • Cinemas including Preview Theaters
  • Road-motor Transport Undertakings
  • Newspaper Establishments & Private Medical/Educational Institutions
  • Insurance Business, NBFCs, Port Trusts, and Warehousing units

ESIC Registration Eligibility

  • Employee Count: Minimum 10 employees (20 in some states).
  • Wage Limit: Up to ₹21,000/month (₹25,000 for persons with disabilities).
  • Covered Entities: Factories, shops, hotels, cinemas, restaurants, and other establishments listed under the ESI Act, 1948.

  • Chronic Illness: 80% of wages for up to 2 years for specified diseases.
  • Maternity: Full pay for 26 weeks.

  • Funeral Aid: ₹15,000 for last rites.
